The first topic that we covered was techniques and processes. This topic mainly consisted of going into the darkroom and learning how to do photograms, chemigrams, making pinhole cameras, light painting and cyanotypes. These topics only lasted a few weeks but in that time I leant how to take pictures without using a digital device. The topic that I found the most interesting was making the pinhole cameras as they were completely home made, and I found it very interesting making them from scratch and being able to manually operate the camera aperture. The second topic we covered was street photography which contains sub topics within it, such as, 'walk on by', 'looking above and below' and 'over the shoulder' photography. During this topic I researched a lot of different photographers such as Jill Freedman, who takes photographs in very rough areas to capture the atmosphere within that location. As a class we went on a trip around central London and to the Tate modern for some experimentation of street photography which allowed us to understand and learn different techniques which we incorporated into our photography which really helped us to take more professional looking photographs. The third topic that we covered was abstraction, in this topic we learnt more about taking unusual images and learnt how to layer our images. For abstraction we took pictures of different objects and things in everyday life that we thought looked very unusual and abstract looking such as shadows, sculptures, buildings and plants etc. Whilst learning the topic of abstraction I researched into many different photographers who studied abstraction within there photography, for example, the first photographer I researched into was called Uta Barth, Uta Barth takes her photographs purposefully out of focus to create an abstract effect to her photography. Researching into Uta Barth gave me more understanding of abstraction and inspired me to take some photographs in a similar way to what she did. One other abstract photographer I researched during the topic of abstraction was Mark Mawson, I found his work very interesting and unusual looking, this lead me to creating a final piece inspired by Mark Mawson using ink and water to produce a final outcome for this topic. The fourth topic we covered was Edges, in this topic we researched many different photographers including Lucio Fontana and my favourite abstract photographer Dolores marat who inspired me to take pictures in a similar style to hers. We also had many tasks in order to take photos of edges of objects around school and capture many different shape and lines within our pictures, by doing this it really taught me to look at slight detail in every day objects and allowed me to get a better understanding of the topic.
